AirShare integrates with FlyFreely for a safer airspace

New Zealand commercial drone operators using the FlyFreely drone management platform can now request access to controlled airspace, thanks to FlyFreely’s integration with AirShare. FlyFreely is the first organisation to integrate with AirShare, Airways New Zealand’s UA traffic management (UTM) system which is used as an online hub for New Zealand drone users. FlyFreely is using AirShare’s public flight request and authorisation APIs to allow its users to request access to controlled airspace as part of its offering.

FAA Awards $2.7M in Drone Research to Support Disaster Preparedness, Emergency Response

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) awarded $2.7 million to support research on how drones can assist in disaster preparedness and in emergencies. “Every second counts in an emergency, and this funding will allow drones to safely and more quickly deploy in moments when minutes matter,” said Acting FAA Administrator Billy Nolen. The research will explore the use of drones in providing effective and efficient responses to different natural and human-made disasters.

The ASPRID project makes headway in testing system to protect airports from drone incursions.

The companies participating in the ASPRID Project, which studies innovative ways to protect airports from drone incursions as part of the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Programme, carried out a laboratory test in a gaming exercise format to validate the operational concept of the system.The aim was to demonstrate that the ASPRID system has a positive impact in reacting to drone threats in the airport environment, by enacting scenarios in which real-time airport traffic simulation software tools have been used, as well as to develop a reporting environment during the project.

Thales selected by Airservices Australia to carry out drone surveillance trials at Sydney airport

Thales has been selected by Airservices Australia, an Australian Government-owned organisation responsible for the safe and efficient management of 11 per cent of the world’s airspace, as the prime systems integrator to launch an Integrated Drone Surveillance Trial utilising the company’s advanced drone surveillance solution. With the use of drones for commercial and leisure purposes expected to grow exponentially, it is becoming a necessity to identify and efficiently manage their activity near airports.

U-Space real laboratory receives 2022 innovation award

Droniq GmbH and DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH (DFS), the German air navigation service provider, have been awarded an innovation prize by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) as part of the real laboratories initiative. Real laboratories are testing grounds for innovation and government regulation in Germany. Droniq and DFS won their award for the U-Space Real Laboratory Hamburg. As part of this real laboratory, it was demonstrated for the first time how a U-Space can function in practice.

Germany aims to implement drone zones swiftly

Droniq GmbH and its parent company DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH, the German air navigation service provider, today published their recommendations for the establishment of U-space areas. The findings underlying the recommendations stem from a research project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV). These ecommendations will help spur the introduction of U-space areas in Germany from 2023. U-space areas allow drones to be safely integrated into airspace, including the interplay with manned aircraft.
