Airborne Collision Avoidance Systems

The Airborne Collision Avoidance System II (ACAS II, also known as TCAS II) is mandatory equipment on all medium and large civil aircraft.

This course aims to give an appreciation of the operational and technical principles of ACAS, and its interaction with ATM.

The course is aimed at controllers, regulators, operators, and pilots. The course can be tailored to the needs of the customer, and typically covers the following topics:

  • History – the development of ACAS from earliest systems to the current TCAS Version 7.1
  • ACAS alerts and displays
  • Design – hardware (antennas, displays etc.) and software (surveillance, threat detection and resolution etc.) components
  • Safety performance – metrics, studies, and results
  • Operational experience – from both the controller and pilot perspectives
  • Current issues – RA downlink, ACAS on helicopters and Very Light Jets, ADS-B, next generation ACAS etc.
