PACIFIC, a new European project led by Airbus, will advance research on contrail mitigation and non-CO2 impacts

Airbus, within a consortium of 10 partners from four European countries, has launched PACIFIC, a project to study the impact of aviation's non-CO2 emissions on Local Air Quality and Climate with a focus on contrails. Recent studies suggest that the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) could reduce both soot particles and contrail ice crystals. However, additional information on fuel composition and its processing in the engine is necessary to better understand the effects and benefits of SAF.

Airways New Zealand welcomes the CANSO Global Safety Conference 2025

Airways New Zealand is delighted to host the 2025 Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO) Global Safety Conference, set to take place in Christchurch from 25 to 28 March. The conference will bring together more than 100 aviation safety leaders and experts from around the world to discuss and collaborate on safety and technological advancements in air traffic management (ATM) and air navigation services. The CANSO Global Safety Conference will feature a dynamic programme with a different theme each day.

Airbus Foundation joins forces with the Solar Impulse Foundation to boost climate action

The Airbus Foundation and Solar Impulse Foundation have launched a three-year partnership aimed at driving global progress on sustainability through fostering innovation and collaboration. The partnership is dedicated to identifying and accelerating the adoption of scalable nature-based* projects that address pressing global challenges. Through the partnership, successful applicants will have access to a wealth of resources including Airbus’ aerospace capabilities, like satellite data for earth observation and helicopters for efficient aerial assessment and verification.

SAF Registry to be Operated by the Civil Aviation Decarbonization Organization

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has established the Civil Aviation Decarbonization Organization (CADO) to manage the IATA-developed Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Registry when it is released. “CADO will turbo-charge the imminent launch of the IATA-developed SAF Registry. Its mandate is to manage the SAF Registry as a separate entity from IATA with an open and global approach that supports the scrutiny needed to build trust among all stakeholders. In fact, the door is open for any stakeholder in the SAF value chain, including governments, to join CADO.

UK electric Air Taxi service on the horizon - Joby and Virgin Atlantic Announce Partnership

Joby Aviation, Inc., a California-based company developing electric air taxis for commercial passenger service, today announced a partnership with Virgin Atlantic, a premium long-haul UK airline, that will see the companies partner on the launch of Joby’s revolutionary air taxi service in the UK. The partnership builds on an existing agreement between Joby and Delta Air Lines – which owns a 49 percent stake in Virgin Atlantic – to launch service in the US and UK, and brings together brands committed to innovation, customer service and challenging the status quo.

Eurocontrol Data Snapshot: How many aircraft are in the air at a given moment?

This data snapshot analyses the total number of aircraft in the air for any 15 minutes interval in 2024. In other words, what was the maximum number of airborne IFR aircraft in the EUROCONTROL area at a given point in time? Let’s have a closer look. The highest number of aircraft airborne within a 15-minute interval in EUROCONTROL airspace in 2024 was recorded between 11:30 and 11:45 (UTC) on 6 September with 4,577 airborne flights –more than half a million people in the sky! It also marks the peak for the entire 2019-2024 period.
