40 years of Air Traffic Control Training in Luxembourg

Today the EUROCONTROL Institute of Air Navigation Services (IANS), located in Luxembourg, celebrated 40 years of developing and delivering Air Traffic Management Training for air navigation service providers, civil and military state authorities of EUROCONTROL Member States and EUROCONTROL Agency staff.
The Institute, part of EUROCONTROLs Cooperative Network Design Directorate (CND), was created in 1969 and moved into new modern training premises in 1999. The majority of course participants are highly qualified multi lingual adult learners from the EUROCONTROL Member States. More than 4000 students join courses each year and over 45,000 people have studied at the Institute since its creation. They study issues such as Safety Management, reducing the impact of aviation on the Environment, optimising airspace structures and advanced technical subjects like radar surveillance, satellite navigation and aeronautical communication. Using its state of the art simulator the Institute also trains student Air Traffic Controllers for the Air Traffic Control Centre in Maastricht. Speaking at the 40th anniversary celebration, Mr David McMillan, Director General of EUROCONTROL said European Air Traffic Management today needs to face up to the current economic slowdown while ensuring that the network as a whole becomes more cost-effective, safer and environmentally friendly. And as we look to the future, under the Single European Sky, the way air traffic is managed will also change. I am proud that stakeholders know that they will be able to call on the Institute to support them and help them and their staff adapt to their changing requirements.
