The Aviation Studies Institute Publishes Review of Super Short-Haul Flights in Southeast Asia, Revealing Policy Challenges and Opportunities
Aviation Studies Institute White Paper: The Future of Super Short-Haul Air Travel in Southeast Asia
The Aviation Studies Institute, at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), is pleased to announce the publication of their latest industry white paper “The Future of Super Short-Haul Air Travel in Southeast Asia.” Featuring recently completed analyses of data from 2023, the paper looks at commercial passenger air transport for flights traversing routes of up to 500 km. It also reveals trends in the segment over the last 2 to 4 years.
The paper highlights key transport policies that impact the segment. Several recommendations are made to improve its future prospect, and its environmental impact. The paper also contains an 8‑page overview of a selection of airline commitments to Zero Emission Aircraft globally, and the contrast to Southeast Asia where there appear to be none.
“The reduced popularity of turboprops – among Southeast Asian airlines and consumers – poses a potential setback in the Southeast Asian aviation sector’s decarbonisation and sustainability initiative.”
The white paper is the first of a two-part analysis that considers the broader integration of transport connectivity in Southeast Asia. The second part will follow in the spring of 2024.
