Eurocontrol: Latest traffic situation as of yesterday Sunday 29 March 2020 (compared with equivalent day in 2019)
Eurocontrol have been updating the traffic situation on a daily basis during the COVID-19 crisis.
They have released the following statistics today.
1. Summary points on the network situation:
- NM Network flights: 3,352 representing -88.0% (24,470 fewer flights)
Traffic for nearly all states is now down -90% (or even less) compared to last year. For the
largest European aviation markets, on 29 March, traffic was down as follows: Turkey -94%,
Spain -93%, France -93%, Italy -93%, UK -87%, Germany -87%, and Netherlands -85%.
2. Market Segmentation (data up to 26 March):
As per the table below, there were 1,127 ‘All Cargo’ flights on Thursday 26 March 2020, down
1% compared to 1,144 last year (Thursday 28 March 2019). On the same day, there were just
2,872 ‘Scheduled’ operations, down 87%, compared to 22,927 last year; and there were 1,575
‘Charter /Business Aviation’ flights, down 47%, compared to 2,963 in 2019.
3. Europe / USA (data up to 28 March)
By 28 March, traffic between Europe and USA, was down by 75%.

4. Airlines
- Focus on largest airline groups: On 29 March easyJet was down -98.5%, Ryanair -96.9%,Lufthansa -92.8%, Air France-KLM -92.4%, and IAG -83.4%.
- For some of Europe’s other largest airlines (not part of the above groups), the reductions on29 March were: Pegasus -100%, TUI -96%, TAP -94%, Turkish Airlines -94%, LOT Polish -91%,Wizz Air -91%, Norwegian Air Shuttle -89%, SAS -85%, and Finnair -85%.
- In the case of Aer Lingus, traffic was down -42% on 29 March. However, the airline hasindicated to EUROCONTROL that its operation will drop down to approximately 75% from 30March (as it will operate approximately 20 short-haul rotations mainly between IRL & UK,some European destinations and 3 long-haul operations).
5. Airports:
- Virtually all of Europe’s largest airports are now managing 90% fewer flights compared to lastyear, examples: Paris Orly -97%, Vienna -95%, Munich -95%, Barcelona -94%, Geneva -93%,London Gatwick -92%, Istanbul -90%, Madrid -90%, Paris CDG -89%, Milan Malpensa -87%, Amsterdam -87%, Dublin -77% and London Heathrow -74%.
