European airspace charts join the smart generation
Since September 2012, a new set of electronic EUROCONTROL Regional Charts has been accessible online, free of charge. These charts replace the older paper ones (previously, the ASM and CFMU charts). They are downloadable as PDF files and remain active even without internet connections; they have been specially designed to be used on smart technology.
With European airspace becoming ever more complex, paper charts have clearly reached their readability limits.
Since September 2012, EUROCONTROLs cartography service has been giving European airspace users electronic charts instead of paper ones.
These charts, the European Regional Charts (ERC), depict the latest version of the ATS route network; they include civil and military airspace structures as well as ATC ATFM sectors, for planning purposes.
The service uses data originating from the European AIS Database (EAD) and from NM airspace data (for the ATFM sectors). The charts facilitate airspace design and ATFM strategic planning for all Air Traffic Management (ATM) stakeholders.
The ERC charts are updated at the beginning of each AIRAC (Aeronautical Information Regulation and Control) cycle. The electronic format consists of a set of 12 charts which offer improved readability and display; they feature these elements:
Only charts for the upper airspace are available at the moment; lower airspace will follow in 2013.

- major airports
- the Flight Information Region (FIR/UIR)
- Free Route airspace
- the temporary airspace areas and conditional routes (CDR) stemming from the FUA (flexible use of airspace)
- the Air Traffic Services (ATS) route network over the ECAC States area
- the Airspace sectorisation used by the Network Manager Operations Centre (NMOC).
