FREQUENTIS supplies Digital Tower solution in Greenland

- Greenland.

Frequentis has been awarded a contract by COMSA Corporación, the largest unlisted Spanish group in the infrastructure and engineering sector, to provide a Local Digital Tower solution for the new Qaqortoq Airport in Greenland. This project marks an important step in the modernisation of Greenland’s aviation infrastructure, enabling air traffic control (ATC) operations with advanced digital solutions that reduce the need for traditional tower infrastructure.

The solution provided by Frequentis will equip Qaqortoq with a Digital Tower system, where the controller operates directly on-site. High-resolution cameras mounted on a mast at the airport will transmit live visual data to the control room, ensuring full situational awareness for air traffic controllers without requiring the construction of a conventional tower. This innovative approach is cost-effective and operationally flexible, making it a perfect fit for greenfield airports like Qaqortoq.

“At COMSA Corporación we are committed to innovative solutions that add value to the development of projects for our clients. In this sense, the alliance with Frequentis and the implementation of its Digital Tower system has allowed us to improve the information received in the control tower, as well as to optimise the investment in this service at new airports,” explains Enrique Cano, COMSA Industrial Operations Manager.

This project builds on a successful partnership between Frequentis and COMSA, following similar implementations at airports in Nuuk and Ilulissat. Frequentis' technologies have improved how air traffic controllers work in Greenland’s airspace. The Qaqortoq installation strengthens the company’s position for future projects, in line with Greenland Airports’ vision for centralised air traffic control from Nuuk.

“We are excited to continue our collaboration with COMSA on the Qaqortoq Airport project. This Digital Tower project is a perfect example of how airports can take advantage of innovative technologies in air traffic control especially in terms of cost savings and flexibility,” says Reinhard Grimm, Executive Vice President, Frequentis.
