Harris Corporation Selected to Modernize Caribbean Gateway with Two New Air Traffic Control Systems
Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, has been awarded a contract to modernize critical air traffic control (ATC) communications at two international airports in Jamaica.
Harris will supply its Liberty-STAR™ Voice Communication and Control System (VCCS) to the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay and the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston. Both airports are home to the country’s national airline, Air Jamaica.
Featuring a modular architecture, open-platform software and commercial-off-the-shelf hardware, Liberty-STAR™ VCCS delivers a reliable, scalable communications solution for ATC towers, airline and area control dispatch, flight service stations, and mobile shelters. The systems for both airports will be equipped with touch-screen operator positions, radio interfaces, telephone interfaces, and a System Maintenance, Administration and Reconfiguration Terminal (SMART) POSITION™.
“Jamaica’s economic prosperity is centered on its tourism industry and the ability to maintain safe and efficient airways,” said John O'Sullivan, vice president, Mission Critical Networks, Harris Government Communications Systems. “With over three-quarters of Jamaica’s international traffic landing at these two airports, Liberty-STAR will provide highly reliable ATC communications that will help the country’s economy thrive.”
Harris has extensive experience developing mission-critical solutions that support civil and military air traffic control operations worldwide, including more than 200 customers in 50 countries. While this is the company’s first ATC communications contract in Jamaica, Harris has supplied communications systems for a wide range of countries in the Caribbean region, including the Dominican Republic, Barbados, Aruba, Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos.
