IFATCA is ready to help improve EASA system
On 28 May 2009, the European Aviation Safety Authority (EASA) provided an extensive briefing to representatives of European air traffic controllers, pilots and air traffic services engineers in Brussels. The briefing addressed the impact that the extension of the EASA regulatory domain to ATM/CNS, Aerodromes will have on the future rulemaking in these fields.
The extension of the EASA regulatory domain to the field of ATM will address, among other areas, the use of airspace, ATM/CNS Services, Systems and constituents, service providers and training organisations. In particular, the qualification of ATCOs will be addressed and this subject was debated at length during the briefing. The exchange of information in the lively discussions was appreciated by the participants.
The extension of the EASA regulation to Air Traffic Management and the Airport domain will have a significant impact on Air Traffic Controllers says Marc Baumgartner, IFATCA President and CEO. The planned revocation of the EC Directive on ATCO licensing needs to be properly assessed and reviewed in order to ensure that the EASA system brings genuine safety benefits to the ATCO. With our extensive world wide experience and expertise on ATCO licensing and working conditions, IFATCA trusts that EASA will involve us and take advantage of our knowledge and resources to help improve the overall system.
