Managed-AIS complete AIXM 5.1 research for EUROCONTROL
Aeronautical information specialists Managed-AIS have completed an AIXM 5.1 research project for EUROCONTROL, the European Agency for the Safety of Air Navigation. The project, carried out by Managed-AIS consultants in Edinburgh, provides a comprehensive mapping between the contents of the Integrated Aeronautical Information Package (IAIP) as defined by ICAO and the AIXM 5.1 specification.
This mapping provides an important bridge between the traditional AIS outputs including AIP and NOTAM with the modern data environment of AIXM and provides a further proof of concept of the AIXM model.
The work has drawn on the companys expertise in AIP, AIS and AIXM and previous projects in mapping between AIXM formats, including mapping AIXM 3.3 to 4.5. The resources created will be used by EUROCONTROL in their AIM activities, including the European AIS Database project, where Managed-AIS provide the eAIP production subsystem. Additionally, the information gathered during the project will play a part in assisting European states with their Aeronautical Data Quality (ADQ) requirements.
In addition to drawing on the data modelling tools used in previous AIXM projects, the project team used the DITA (Darwin Information Typing Architecture) standard to ensure the easy display and re-use of the information produced. This has also allowed the project deliverables to be made available in a variety of formats.
Andrew Barrett, Managing Director of the company said M-AIS are very pleased to have delivered this project on-time and within budget for Eurocontrol. It was a complex mapping across many domains which generated thousands of pages of linked XHTML and RTF content. The mix of AIXM XML Mapping, AIM Domain Knowledge, Java and DITA based output suited our skill set perfectly and we were able to work well with the team at Eurocontrol with minimal supervision.
