NATCA relieved furloughs are over for FAA employees, 'This awful episode must never happen again'

National Air Traffic Controllers Association President Paul Rinaldi issued the following statement following this mornings Senate vote to extend FAA funding and bring to a close the two-week-long partial FAA shutdown that forced the furlough of 4,000 FAA employees, including 1,200 of NATCAs bargaining unit members:
We are absolutely relieved that these men and women who have suffered so greatly these past two weeks will now get to return to their important jobs and earn a paycheck that wont be held up in another Washington political game.

This was a tremendously difficult time for them and their families, and for all of the tens of thousands of construction workers who didnt get paid while their airport projects were shut down by the lack of funding. While this chapter is now closed, we will continue to fight for these workers moving forward in hopes that this never happens again.

We would like to thank the Administration, Transportation Secretary LaHood and FAA Administrator Babbitt for their leadership and passionate fight on behalf of these workers who contribute so mightily to the United States having the safest and most efficient aviation system in the world. We also want to thank Congress for finishing its work and restoring full operations to the FAA and our airport infrastructure that is so integral to helping drive our economy forward.

This awful episode must never happen again.
