NAV CANADA Projects a 21 Million Metric Ton Reduction in Aviation-Related GHG Emissions
NAV CANADA, the country's air navigation service provider, today released its annual report detailing progress in efforts to reduce the effects of aviation on the environment. The fourth edition of Collaborative Initiatives for Emission Reductions (CIFER), updates the reduction and projected reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from 1997 to 2020.
The 2013 CIFER report outlines the efficiency improvements gained through the adoption of new technologies and air traffic management procedures that enable an estimated 21 million- metric ton reduction in GHG emission reductions (1997 - 2020). These efficiencies also translate to an approximate fuel savings of $7.4 billion over that period.
"I am always inspired by the initiatives that come forward from our innovative and dedicated staff" said John Crichton, NAV CANADA President & CEO. "Working with customers and other industry partners, we have made real progress in reducing the environmental impact of aviation through more efficient air navigation services, and there's more to come in the future."
The fourth edition of the report describes the progress of the existing collaborative initiatives between NAV CANADA and its airline customers. It also highlights new and upcoming initiatives such as the expansion of satellite-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) surveillance via Aireon, the Company's joint venture with Iridium Communications.
