Hong Kong International Airport implements NAVCANatm technology
The Civil Aviation Department (CAD) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government is now using technology developed by NAV CANADA for its Air Traffic Services Data Management System (ATSDMS) to manage, integrate, and display real-time air traffic control (ATC) information.
CAD completed the implementation of the ATSDMS using NAVCANatm technology at its new ATC Centre and Tower in Hong Kong on November 14, 2016. Services provided by NAV CANADA include software development, system installation, operational and technical training, on-site and remote technical support, and hardware and software maintenance after system deployment through years of close collaborative work.
NAVCANinfo, the foundation for ATSDMS, manages and displays extensive operational data and safety-critical information to air traffic controllers in real-time. Information layouts, displays and notifications are customizable to meet the needs of each controller, helping to improve efficiency and enhance safety.
“We are pleased to be working with the Hong Kong CAD to bring NAV CANADA’s advanced technology to Hong Kong,” said Neil Wilson, NAV CANADA’s President and CEO. “This technology will bring important safety and efficiency gains to Hong Kong, which is well-known as one of the major international and regional aviation hubs in the world.”
In 2016, HKIA handled 70.5 million passenger trips and 4.52 million tonnes of cargo. It is the world's busiest air cargo gateway and one of the world's busiest passenger airports.
The ATSDMS used by CAD mainly includes:
- An enhanced Air Traffic Control Data Network, which is the communications backbone for all new ATC systems for the HKIA.
- An Operational Information Database System (OIDS), which captures real-time and safety critical information from ATC systems and other airport operational systems owned by different local aviation partners through dedicated interfaces, and provides integrated operational displays in ATC towers/centres and information exchange/dissemination services among ATC systems and other airport operational systems for supporting ATC operations and collaborative decision making in aviation community in order to enhance flight safety and operational efficiency.
NAVCANatm is a leading line of integrated air traffic management products, applications and services operationally deployed at over 100 sites worldwide for safe, efficient and cost-effective air traffic management.
NAV CANADA is the country’s private sector civil air navigation services provider. With operations from coast to coast to coast, NAV CANADA provides air traffic control, flight information, weather briefings, aeronautical information services, airport advisory services and electronic aids to navigation.
CAD is responsible for regulating the operational safety and airworthiness of aircraft registered in Hong Kong; planning, co-ordination, provision and subsequent maintenance / enhancements of the air traffic control systems, radar, navigational aids and communication equipment for the Hong Kong International Airport ; licensing, regulation, inspection and monitoring of safety and security of aerodromes (including heliports) in Hong Kong; the provision of air traffic control service, flight information service and alerting service within the Hong Kong Flight Information Region as assigned by the International Civil Aviation Organization; and implementation of air services arrangements and aviation policy to enable air services to be operated to meet demand.
