Promoting Flight Level Adherence across Europe
As part of its year-long campaign to promote the pan-European Flight Plan & ATFCM Adherence, EUROCONTROL is using social
media to drive operational participants to a Flight Level Adherence Days trial on 30 September and 1 October 2010 to a website (www.adherencedays.com) where they can get all related information but also provide their feedback and experience.

Daily across Europe, regulations are put in place to protect ATC from receiving more traffic than what can be safely handled. However, traffic regularly exceeds capacity and lack of adherence to the planned flight level is often cited as a contributory factor: in 2009 one third of all ATFCM over-deliveries were caused by differences between the actual flight level and the requested flight level in the flight plan.
The objective of the Flight Level Adherence campaign is
to reduce over-deliveries in ATC sectors, improve overall network data consistency, accuracy and traffic prediction and to identify benefits such as capacity improvements or other operational issues for ANSPs and Aircraft Operators.
From publishing NOTAMs to briefing staff and ensuring that pilots are aware of the Flight Level Adherence days, all actors involved in operations are working closely together to make these days a success. Pilots, air traffic controllers, flight dispatchers, aircraft operators and ANSPs will also provide feedback and opinions after the trial; this will help in considering the benefits and issues as
input to the next actions to improve predictability, reduced overloads, over deliveries and overall network performance.
If we are to achieve our long-term aim which is to improve capacity planning and increase predictability, and with business trajectories on the horizon, we need to get feedback from all the different groups of people who are participating in this trial, said Joe Sultana, Deputy Director CFMU.
It is a first step, but a very important one to set the scene and to know how to take this further. Use of the social media has proven key to get all on board Flight Level Adherence Days website: http://www.adherencedays.com/
