Solar runway guard lights for Belfast City
George Best Belfast City Airport has become the third UK airport to install solar powered LED runway safety lighting
The Aviation Renewables Solar Series Runway Guard Lights, supplied by Systems Interface Ltd in Surrey, are nick-named Wig Wags, and are used at intersections between the runway and taxiways to safely guide aircraft and vehicles during night and day operations. The batteries are charged via solar panels and store enough energy to operate 24/7 for up to 120 days without any solar charging.
By eliminating the need to install an additional costly electrical circuit, Systems Interface were able to save the airport significant sums while offering a clean, renewable airfield lighting solution.
