ATM security: FREQUENTIS hosts important EUROCAE workshop

Successful EUROCAE WG-72 subgroup meeting, dealing with ATM information security, took place at Frequentis Headquarters in Vienna

- Vienna, Austria.

From 11-12 October, the sub-workgroup 2 (SG-2) of the EUROCAE Aeronautical Information Systems Security Working Group (WG-72) met for a workshop at Frequentis AG headquarters in Vienna, Austria. By hosting this important EUROCAE security workshop Frequentis demonstrates its strong commitment to developing systems with security, and the importance of contributing to setting standards.

EUROCAE, the European Organisation for Civil Aviation Equipment, is the European leader in the development of worldwide recognised industry standards for aviation. Through WG-72, EUROCAE and its members are developing aeronautical system security guidelines specifying security objectives in order to ensure their stability over time, addressing airborne systems and interfacing ground systems in their end-to-end relationship.

WG-72 has adopted a holistic approach, addressing security-related topics throughout the entire lifecycle of products developed, manufactured and operated by many different civil aviation stakeholders. Currently, WG-72 is working on the ED-203revA (airworthiness security methods and considerations) and the ED-205 (security accreditation of ATM systems). The latter of which was the focus of the SG-2 meeting in Vienna, where participants representing regulatory agencies, ANSPs, vendors, solution providers, and consultants, prepared for the finalisation of the ED-205 draft standard.

“Since 2011, Frequentis has been ISO 27001 certified and our products are developed according to strict safety and security requirements, with a special methodology to finding the correct balance between often contradictory needs. Frequentis is committed to ensuring information security in safety critical systems”, says Hannu Juurakko, Vice President ATM Civil.

Through a comprehensive security program, Frequentis is further enhancing its safety and security methodology to comply with the upcoming changes in the security policies of its customers and the regulatory environment. As part of this program, Frequentis actively participates in EUROCAE efforts on standardising security practices for ATM systems, supporting the ED-205 process specification development with important contributions. Being part of the standardisation process ensures that the Frequentis products will accommodate the upcoming ED-205 process specification as soon as possible.
