FREQUENTIS modernises voice communication at Hong Kong International Airport
The Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department (HKCAD) has selected Frequentis to successfully commission, the Frequentis’ VCS3020X at the backup air traffic control centre of the Hong Kong International Airport. This will allow the continuous modernisation of HKCAD’s voice communication system (VCS). The VCS from Frequentis at the backup air traffic control centre has worked in parallel with the VCS installed by Schmid, during an earlier phase of the project.
Frequentis won the contract through an open tender bidding process based on its advanced VCS system and experience with similar projects, including integration with Schmid systems. Frequentis has equipped more than 100 controller workstations for the backup air traffic control centre and south aerodrome control tower, which includes a main and a backup system.
Hong Kong International Airport has experienced year-on-year growth in aircraft movements for more than a decade. To manage continued airspace demand HKCAD chose Frequentis to complete their VCS project in order to enhance air traffic control (ATC) communications infrastructure for improved and resilient ATC services.
As a gateway to China, and a busy airport hub, Hong Kong International Airport manages more than 420,000 flight movements per year and is the world’s busiest cargo airport. In 2012, HKCAD engaged Frequentis to optimise operations by replacing its paper flight strips with the company’s electronic smartSTRIPS, to automate data retrieval and increase operator efficiency. By completing the latest modernisation of VCS, the ATC operational efficiency has been enhanced supporting its continuous air traffic growth.
“We are pleased to be working with Hong Kong CAD again, this time providing our VCS to Hong Kong International Airport, enhancing its ability to handle increasing flight volume. VCS3020X provides safety-critical Air/Ground and Ground/Ground communication with the highest reliability, making it well suited for high traffic volume airports.”, says Hannu Juurakko, Frequentis Vice President ATM Civil.
