G&D’s UTM Expertise: Control room specialists bring ATM know-how to drone management project

Urban logistics in the city of tomorrow - an exciting topic that is currently the focal point of the EU-funded Kodrona project in Siegen, North Rhine-Westphalia. Could unmanned drones be used to transport medical samples between hospitals?

As a leading KVM manufacturer for mission-critical control room applications in air traffic control and remote tower control (RTC), Guntermann und Drunck GmbH (G&D) is now using its ATM expertise in unmanned traffic management (UTM). In ATC, the use of KVM systems makes a significant contribution to operational safety in flight monitoring and optimises work processes for control staff.

With many years of experience in setting up control room infrastructures, G&D is now part of a drone management pilot project. The Kodrana project is currently investigating whether a 2.5km-long route between two hospital sites could be connected via drone, e.g. for blood samples. The control room experts at G&D are applying their skills from the ATM sector to setting up a control centre for flight monitoring to guarantee maximum safety and optimal process tracking in the operation of this drone transport. From the control centre, a user should be able to authorise, monitor and coordinate transport flights. The KODRONA project operates under maximum security aspects to protect citizens as well as other road and air users. ‘We are happy to be able to bring our air traffic control expertise to a regional project in the city of Siegen.
